Thomas E. Kennedy
Thomas E. Kennedy's 26 bøger omfatter romaner, historie og essay-samlinger, oversættelser, litteraturkritik og antologier. Han blev født i New York City, men flyttede til Europa i midten af 1970'erne og har boet i Danmark de sidste 30 år.
Ud over hundreder af historier, essays, digte, oversættelser og interviews omfatter Thomas’ udgivelser de fire bind af "The Copenhagen Quartet," - fire uafhængige romaner om den danske hovedstads sjæle og sæsoner. Oprindeligt offentliggjort (2002-2005) på et lille forlag i Irland, blev de fire romaner udgivet i 2010 af det verdensomspændende forlag Bloomsbury Publishing og er begyndt at dukke op i USA, Canada, Europa og Australien.
Det første bind, "In the Company of Angels" er ved at blive optrykt for anden gang og har modtaget store roser fra kendte tidsskrifter såsom "The Washington Post", "The New Yorker", "The London Times," og mange andre amerikanske og britiske aviser og tidskrifter. De oprindelige bøger modtog også stor ros fra "Politiken", "Information" og andre danske aviser.
Kennedy har desuden oversat forskellige danske forfattere til amerikansk, herunder Dan Turèll, Henrik Nordbrandt, Pia Tafdrup og mange andre. Han har vundet adskillige priser, herunder the National Magazine Award (den mest prestigefyldte amerikanske pris, der gives til forfattere af tidsskriftsartikler), The O. Henry Award, the Pushcart price, den Europæiske pris og andre. Han underviser også i skrivning på universiteter i USA og England. Kennedy bor i København og har to danskfødte børn.

The Copenhagen Quartet – selected readings and backgroundSelected readings from the four independent novels of “The Copenhagen Quartet,” each set in the Danish capital, each in a different season, and each in a different style:[+] One is a satire about the downsizing of a Danish firm; one is literary “noir,” focusing on the dark side of Copenhagen winter with violence, jazz, sex, drink, murder and other “cozy” criminalities; one is a novel about a Chilean torture victim being treated in the Copenhagen rehabilitation center for torture survivors who meets a Danish woman who has herself survived a violent marriage; and one a novel disguised as a guide to Copenhagen “serving houses,” a love story in which each chapter is set in a different værtshus.
In addition to reading from the novels, Kennedy speaks about the genesis and background of the four books and answers questions about them. + mere om Help! They Want to Cut Out My Prostate!For two years as a result of a blood measurement, the Danish health care system assured Kennedy that he had cancer in his prostate and that it should be removed. However, they could not remove it until they actually detected a cancer cell; despite two dozen blood tests, thirty-six biopsies (the last 3 surgical), and various other testing, they could not find a single cancer cell.[+]
In 2007, Kennedy wrote an essay about the experience, which he published in the magazine “New Letters,” and the American Society of Magazine Editors judged it to be the best essay published in America for the entire year and awarded it the National Magazine Award (an “Ellie,” the most prestigious prize for magazine writing in the U.S.).
Kennedy’s essay, published in a small literary magazine, won out over finalists in such prestigious magazines as “The New Yorker,” “The Atlantic,” “Harper’s” and other wide circulation periodicals – it also beat an essay by Stephen King about Harry Potter!
To Kennedy’s delight, the essay made people laugh – riotously, and the judges called it “wickedly funny.” It was published in Danish in the magazine “Euroman” in 2008.
Kennedy reads the essay – which usually inspires laughter and good cheer – and takes questions afterwards about the experience. + mere om Life in Another LanguageHaving lived in Denmark for his second 30 years and the United States for his first 30, and having learned the customs and traditions and history and language of his chosen home in the Danish capital, Kennedy is in a somewhat unique position to talk about his life in Denmark – in a way that generally interests, delights, and amuses Danes – and to compare it with life in the United States.[+]
He published a long essay about this in “Frank Magazine” in Paris and has spoken to a wide range of groups about the subject. This talk is followed by a discussion with the audience.
+ mere om Dan Turèll in AmericanIn 2008, Kennedy was surprised to learn that the poetry of Dan Turèll – of which he is a fan – has never been professionally translated into American. Turèll, who was greatly inspired by the literature and music of the U.S., wished that it would be translated, but despite the increasing popularity of Turèll’s poetry since his death nearly twenty years ago, it never had been.[+]
Chili Turèll approved Kennedy as translator of her late husband’s work, and the Literature Committee of the Danish Art Council funded his work with several grants, and Kennedy has now translated selections from what he considers Turèll’s greatest work, “Storby Trilogi,” into American.
Kennedy is not surprised that American and British literary magazines have eagerly published the translations (“New Letters,” “Perigee,” “Poetry Wales,” “Absinthe: New European Writing”), but was surprised to find that Turèll’s Danish fans, as well as English-speakers, also enjoy hearing him read the Turèll poems in American.
He has read them at a wide range of venues – Vangede Bibliotek (which includes a display of Kennedy’s hand-written translations), Underwood Ink, Det Poetisk Bureau, the Danish-Irish Society, Fairleigh Dickinson University – and has continued to be delighted with the positive response, especially from the Danes.
His Turèll translation has also been published in a bilingual edition of “Gennem Byen Sidste Gang/Last Walk Through the City” printed in a limited edition with four original, signed lithographs by the Danish artist Barry Lereng Wilmont. Kennedy and Halfdan E are also in the process of replicating the two CDs that Turèll made with Halfdan E’s musical back-up.
In this presentation, Kennedy talks about the experience of translating Turèll’s poetry into American and reads a sampling of poems from Turèll’s “Storby Trilogi.” + mere om Danish Poetry in AmericanWith considerable funding from the Danish State, Kennedy has translated many Danish poets and writers into American – including Dan Turèll, Henrik Nordbrandt, Pia Tafdrup as well as younger writers such as Martin Glaz Serup, Dy Plambeck, Line-Maria Lång and others.[+]
He has also edited two full-length anthologies as special issues of recognized American literary magazines as well as a number of mini-anthologies.
